Department of English

The department of English was established in 1955. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. It also offers a vocational course in Functional Communicative English, and a UGC recognized Career Oriented Programme (COP) in English Language and Communicative Skills. The department offers electives in two papers to the third year students.

The English department has produced students who have gone on to contribute to research, and as faculty to institutions like SOAS (University of London); Centre for Cultural Studies, Bangalore; the University of Hull, Delhi University; the University of Pune and Hyderabad.

The total number of English Literature books in the College library is 10,564. The central library subscribes to six journals.

Apart from the refresher courses (which all members of the department have completed), the department has evolved its own mechanism to upgrade itself - an annual departmental seminar to which our visiting postgraduate faculty are also invited.
As a group, the department organises, participates, and encourages students to participate in at least two intra and inter departmental seminars annually. However, individuals in the department have participated in various academic activities in India and abroad.
The department has a wide variety of research interests and thrust areas: British Literature, especially poetry; the Study of Christianity; Dalit Movements; Ethnography, Education Theory, Gender Studies, and History, English Language Teaching and Applied Linguistics, British Drama and Language Teaching Innovation.
The department has 8 international and 7 national publications, 19 presentations in national and international seminars, nine books and contributions in 5 books.
The English department plans to continue with its intensive research interests alongside its regular teaching as well as to maintain, and if possible, expand areas for seminars/conferences. In the face of the increasing heterogeneity of the student intake and the continuous depletion of faculty numbers, it has been an ongoing struggle to maintain our standards.
