Criterion VII – Healthy Practices
Criterion VII – Healthy Practices
The Team was really impressed by the intensity of efforts and
the nature of structures created in the College and some allied to the College
for providing to the students and the staff opportunities for optimum
development of their talents and for acquiring skills. The Team particularly
commends the structures which combine skill acquiring, research training and
social training.
Some of these healthy practices deserve to be specifically
mentioned:
- The College has well defined and concrete aims and objectives which
constantly inspire the formulation of curricular, co-curricular and
extra-curricular activities. What is still more commendable is the constant
examination and re-examination of their aims and objectives, after in-depth
discussions in the parent bodies, in order to serve the students in particular
and the society in general. - The College has responded to the needs of the time and introduced
self-financing and vocational courses. More vigorous efforts are required in
this direction despite the constraints of the affiliating system. - The College offers a weekly lecture in value education to all the First
Year Students. Besides, an attempt is made to inculcate amongst students an
interest in Indian Culture and even to propagate it. - The College provides for remedial courses for the needy students. There
is a remedial course in English for those freshers whose schooling has been in
Gujarati medium. There is another bridge course for the students coming from
socially disadvantaged sections. - Senior students are associated with counseling of fresh students and also
with organization of orientation courses for the freshers - The College has earmarked Saturdays for cultural and extra-curricular
activities where the students have the opportunity to develop their talents in
the field of their choice. This is an effective method whereby the students
are able to develop their capacity to learn skills to communicate and skills
to organize and lead. - In keeping with the objectives of the College, there is a full-time
salaried officers to take care of the interests of socially disadvantaged
students. - The College has developed some linkages with the industry though at a
modest scale and only in case of some departments. Besides, some linkages
with certain reputed research centers have been established by individual
teachers. - The College has on its campus certain centers run by the Jesuit
organization. These centers, though technically not part of the College are
of immense benefit to the staff and students of the College. Special mention
may be made in this connection of the Research Centre, Behavioural Science
Centre, Xavier Centre for Development and Gurjarvani.
The list is not exhaustive. Most of these practices and
structures need to be emulated by other Colleges striving for quality and
excellence.
