Attendance

REGULARITY REGARDING ATTENDANCE
A. Discipline

All Xavier institutions are noted for ‘discipline’. This word does not stand for ‘control’ or ‘suppression’ as is mistakenly understood. Rather, it means following a set of rules that ensures a “responsible exercise of one’s
freedom.”

Rules form part and parcel of every institution. Nevertheless, we believe that “rules are for humans, not humans for rules.” And so exceptions can be envisaged. Obviously, students who take the law into their own hands have to pay the consequences! The authorities go out of their way to contact the students, dialogue with offenders and consider their case sympathetically so as to be reasonable with the penalties imposed on them, when necessary, for the maintenance of discipline.

B. Attendance Requirements

The minimum attendance required by the University is 75% of the total number of working days. But the College rules are different. Students are expected to attend all lectures and practicals regularly. Internal marks (5/30) are reserved mainly for attendance. The annual examination forms of those whose attendance at lectures and/or practicals is less than 75% may not be
sent to the University.
The Principal reserves the right to refuse re-admission to students who have shown themselves irregular without adequate cause.  The academic year consists of two terms, starting in June and October/November. Changes in the dates, if any, are announced in all the leading newspapers. St. Xavier’s begins classes and lectures on the first day itself, even if the annual examinations results are not declared. Classes begin at 7.45 a.m. for Arts and 10.45 a.m. for
Science.

C. Rules
  1. All students must be present for the General Assembly at the start of the academic year. Students are required to attend classes from the first day of the term. Students who are absent for the first week of a term shall be considered to have left the College, unless they have prior permission from the Principal.
  2. Students are expected to attend all the lectures/practicals prescribed in the College timetable. Attendance will be marked at each lecture. Science students who do not attend lectures on a particular day may not be allowed into the laboratory for practicals.
  3. Students may absent themselves from College only for a serious reason after submitting a leave application in writing to the Principal or Vice-Principal.
  4. In case of illness, or some other personal matter, the Vice- Principal must be duly informed in writing, not later than ten days from the first day of absence. Medical certificates must be submitted when possible. Students who are reported to be irregular will be first warned, and if they persist in being irregular, will have to explain their absence. If the authorities feel that the reasons supplied are not satisfactory, the
student will be asked to leave the College in the following term.
  5. As a policy, permission to exempt oneself from lectures/practicals is
given only to those who represent the College or University for some event (sports, NCC, NSS, competitions...). Their absence at lectures/practicals is condoned, but this does not guarantee them ‘full marks’ for class participation unless their general response to the subject teacher is satisfactory.

Examinations

St Xavier’s College spaces out its regular internal examinations through the academic year. There are two sets of tests (mid-term and first terminal) in the first term for each of the various courses that are taught. The schedule is posted on the notice board. The second terminal examination, which begins in the latter half of February, is of a three-hour duration on the pattern of the University examination, and includes the entire syllabus. The progress of students is evaluated on the basis of these examinations which are compulsory for all. The students’ internal evaluation marks are based on their performance at these tests and examinations, andon their class participation and attendance. These account for 30% of the marks required for passing the University Examination.

They must check their person, desks, seat surroundings before the exam to make sure that there is nothing to indicate an attempt at using “unfair” means.

of the first term on request at the College office.

STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

STUDENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES

St. Xavier’s College students must realize that they are the guardians of its traditions and ideals both in the College and outside it. Their conduct should at all times reflect their legitimate pride in their College and all it stands for. They should remember that they are expected to learn at St. Xavier’s far more than how to pass their examinations. They are in a period of training designed to create in them a critical awareness of their true reality in our country. Since they are among the few who have access to higher education in India, they must acquire privileged skills and values that will transform society.

On a more practical plane, their attention is drawn to the following important points:

Attitude to teachers

  1. Students should at all times show their professors the honour and respect which is their due. They should greet them whenever they meet them in the College or outside.
  2. Students are encouraged to know their teachers, and give them an opportunity to know them too, outside class. Students must contact staff members who are available for consultation in the staff room whether to discuss a subject, get help for a competition, guidance and counselling, or even a casual chat.
  3. Students must respect the authorities and teaching staff of other colleges. When they have occasion to visit other colleges, Xavierites should scrupulously observe the traditions and regulations of those institutions, and refrain from any action that might disturb their peace and order.

Care of property

  1. Students of St. Xavier’s should look upon College property and building, laboratories, halls, and classrooms with a sense ofr special pride, and refrain from any action that would disfigure or damage them. Offenders in this regard shall be severely dealt with by the College authorities.
  2. Students who inadvertently cause any damage to College property are expected to acquaint the Principal immediately with what has happened. This training in honesty will stand them in good stead in later life.
  3. Students should scrupulously respect the belongings of their fellow students. Should they discover any lost or forgotten article, they should deliver it immediately to the College Office. The Office will put up a notice regarding all lost property instructing the owner to collect it as soon as possible. Students who are found in unlawful possession of another’s
property are liable to instant dismissal from the College.

General Behaviour

For the sake of good order, no less than in his/her own interest, every student should observe the following regulations:

  1. Students must respect as silence zones (the front lobby, all the corridors, and the area surrounding the library) while classes are in progress. Students who cause any disturbance in these zones shall be liable to a fine at the discretion of the Principal.
  2. Students are expected to read the announcements on the notice boards every day, both on arrival at the College and before they depart. Failure to do so could have serious consequences. Ignorance of instructions posted on the notice board shall not be accepted as an excuse for non-compliance with them.
  3. Students are required to observe rigorously the hours of work of the College Office and the College Society Office. Students are required to carry their identity cards on their persons at all times, and to present them for inspection when requested to do so by a professor or competent College authority.
  4. Students who have legitimate grievances are encouraged to place them before the Principal personally or through the suggestion box placed on the corridor outside the Principal’s office. On no account may students organize protest meetings or signatures campaigns.
  5. Students may not form any College society or club without the prior permission of the Principal.
  6. No outside person shall be invited to address a class or College club without the explicit permission of the Principal. 8. Students must park their two-wheeler vehicles only in the enclosure allotted to them in the parking lot near the hockey field. Sitting on parked vehicles and/or in the parking lot is prohibited and liable to a fine. The watchman at the parking lot is authorized to enforce
discipline. Please note that four-wheelers are not allowed on campus. Students of St. Xavier’s who misbehave at another college, or in any public place, or who bring discredit in any way upon themselves or upon this College, are liable to instant dismissal.
  9. New students are to be welcomed with respect and affection. Any type of harassment, ragging or misbehaviour may mean instant dismissal from the College.
